The Director of User Research is responsible for building and leading the user research/usability practice. The Director of User Research will take an active role in all user research activities across the site and products including the planning, scoping, conducting of the research and the analysis of findings. In addition, this person will be responsible for managing a direct report with potential to grow the group, developing research service offerings and managing the evolving user research lab.
Position Responsibilities:
- Building and leading the User Research/Usability practice, team and service offerings
- Taking the leadership role in all user research/usability activities: planning, scoping, conducting and analysis
- Running and maintaining the Usability Lab
- Conducting a variety of user research projects including: focus groups, interviews, card sorting excises, usability testing, etc.
- Identify activities and deliverables necessary to execute user reach projects on time and on budget
- Taking the leadership role in developing the user research portion of the project plan
- Working with the rest of the User Experience and Design team in understanding target audiences' needs, tasks, and goals and translating them into creative concepts
- Translating user needs into meaningful interactive experiences
- Driving User Research thought leadership in the company
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of user research experience
- At least 3 years of management experience
- College and/or advanced degree(s) in Computer Science, HCI, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Information Science or related field
- Expert understanding of the role of research in web design
- Expert understanding of strengths and shortcomings of different research methods, and when to use which
- Must understand and evangelize the role of research in user-centered design
- Ability to use insights from user research to drive requirements
- Experience mentoring and training practitioners in research methods
- Deep understanding of all aspects of interactive design including information architecture, graphic design, usability, and web technologies
- Demonstrated ability to develop big ideas, and execute flawlessly against them in a highly collaborative environment
- Demonstrated experience conducting user research and translating user research into design decisions
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- High tolerance for ambiguity matched only by your desire to organize it
